After the break, Pep Guardiola was left with his head in his hands as he tried to work out how his team were not in front.Laporte drew a double save from Baumann following a corner early in the second half.His attempts would not have counted as Sane’s cross was ruled to have gone out of play but City were in the ascendancy.Then, a superb counter attack, led by Raheem Sterling saw him power forward without a Hoffenheim player in sight, before playing in Sane who then found Bernado Silva, but he failed to provide the finishing touch.

Sterling was again involved and passed to the German who took a touch and this time he made no mistake.City went in search of more and Phil Foden began to grow in confidence.Both he and Sane shot over before Foden met a Sterling cross with a powerful left-foot volley that Baumann tipped over, but City had done enough to get the victory.

Sane was the hero for Manchester City on a night where they could and should have had more than two goals.His equalising free-kick was one Cristiano Ronaldo would have been proud of, as it dipped and swerved into the net.The German’s second goal was far more straightforward – but proved to be the decisive goal.

How it could be anything other than that set-piece from Sane.While it is cliche to say it was in as soon as it left his boot, truer words could not have been spoken more in this case, as he gave Baumann absolutely no chance with his first of the night.
